OnePlus 7 Pro Review: A Step Ahead to The Future 2

OnePlus 7 Pro Review: A Step Ahead to The Future

Now is the time to get serious. With the OnePlus 7 Pro application, the Chinese manufacturer wants to leave a long lost position. OnePlus 7 Pro should be named with the same encouragement as Galaxy S10+, P30 Pro and Apple iPhone XS Max. In a detailed test, we will show you if the OnePlus 7 Pro can fit directly into the top class of smartphones.

  • Excellent 90 Hz display
  • Great performance
  • Latest processer
  • Very fast charging technology
  • Mind-Blowing price
  • Fast operating system

  • Slow Face Unlock
  • Very large and heavy smartphone
  • No IP certification

Design: A Great Mix of Samsung and Huawei

Attractive design and high-quality feel are undoubtedly a key factor when buying a new smartphone. OnePlus smartphones had a high quality feel from the beginning, but the design has been a bit simple in recent years. Finally, with OnePlus 7 Pro, a Chinese manufacturer has a product that can be seen on a red carpet. You can almost think that OnePlus 7 Pro is a cross between Huawei P30 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S9+.

OnePlus 7 Pro Review: A Step Ahead to The Future 3

It remains to be seen if OnePlus 7 Pro can be described as the beauty of smartphones. However, you should note to OnePlus that typical OnePlus features, such as the notification slider, were not a design sacrifice. OnePlus had to move the SIM card slot from the left side of the case to the bottom of the case. The dual-SIM slot has become very interesting. Instead of using a long carriage with two side-by-side SIM cards, OnePlus has come up with a smaller solution. The OnePlus 7 Pro SIM card slot can accommodate two stacked cards. Oppo also uses a similar compact solution on the Reno 10X.

Speaking of Oppo: In the past, Oppo and OnePlus smartphones often had common design elements. The OnePlus 6T and the Oppo RX17 Pro have seen this last. But with OnePlus 7 Pro OnePlus seems to want to differentiate itself more from its sister company because if you look at the Oppo Reno 10X, it is hardly comparable to the OnePlus 7 Pro.

If you take a close look at the back of the OnePlus 7 Pro, you will notice something that a OnePlus smartphone did not have before: the CE logo and the WEEE Directive 2012/19 / EU logo were used subtly. These logos have never been seen on OnePlus smartphones. This also shows that the Chinese manufacturer relies more on established brands such as Samsung and Co. Little interesting find: In our testing device, Shenzhen was written with a big “Z” some kind of quasi Easter egg.

Display: Gorgeous Display

OnePlus could not stay on top of the class with screens. Although AMOLED panels were installed from OnePlus 3, OnePlus remained with FHD+ resolution for longer battery life, while competition on the WQHD screen was ahead. With OnePlus 7 Pro, the manufacturer is now entering and even adding something. The front camera, which leaves the upper frame in a small motorized unit, eliminates the need for notches or holes in the screen. In everyday life, the proud owner can see the screen with very narrow edges that cover 93% of the front.

The new screen was developed in collaboration with Samsung and is now called Fluid-AMOLED. The screen has a diagonal of 6.67 inches, is huge and is first hugged on the OnePlus smartphone with long edges. It is interesting to note that the notification light is on due to the curved edge of the screen. Similar to Samsung Note or S-Series, this lights up briefly when messages arrive. The solution is nothing more than an independent LED that flashes continuously. However, this feature is available again at the request of the community and can be improved later with software updates.

Go to Settings to get another screen premiere of OnePlus. In addition to the resolution, which is set in the native WQHD resolution of 3,120×1,440 pixels by default, there is also a Full HD+ resolution of energy savings. You can also change the refresh rate.

The result: browsing extensive content and playing compatible games is fun with OnePlus 7 Pro. OnePlus 7 Pro gives you the feeling that when the 90 Hz mode is activated, the screen is much smoother, especially during high-speed movements. OnePlus 6 and 6T that I have used for a long time, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, with the feeling that the display screen slows down, even though they are three times faster than smartphones.

Fingerprint: Fast & Usable

With the fingerprint sensor, OnePlus holds the optical sensor. However, to improve speed and recognition speed, OnePlus offers the 7 Pro an advanced sensor from 6 mm to 7 mm. Besides, three lenses were used instead of two lenses. According to OnePlus, the new optical sensor is almost as fast as the old capacitive OnePlus 6. It has to be opened in 0.21 seconds. In the first test, OnePlus can deliver. The fingerprint sensor is fast. The recent speed and the need for face unlocking due to the longer touch pop-up window mean that the fingerprint sensor is used more frequently in everyday life.

Software: OxygenOS on the board

If you ask the OnePlus users which feature or component you prefer on the manufacturer’s smartphone, the software is probably the most mentioned. Even colleagues here at Gadget Center who used a OnePlus smartphone in the past say there is hardly a better manufacturer than OxygenOS. It is close to the Android database, but OnePlus has many tricks that users appreciate, but above all, the speed of OxygenOS is addictive.

Fnatic gaming and Zen mode

At this speed, OnePlus no longer has to screw a lot. Instead, OnePlus maintains new features or details that were recently introduced. One of the latter is the game mode. This spread and now is in Fnatic mode. This was created in partnership with Fnatic, a long-time electronic sports company. In this mode, the entire system becomes a hassle-free game, all notifications are silenced, background activity is minimized, and hardware is cut to high performance.

In addition to the game mode, there is also a Zen mode where you get the opposite. If Zen mode is activated, your smartphone goes into a kind of deep sleep for 20 minutes. Messages or calls are not forwarded and the phone is not locked. Only emergency calls can be made in Zen mode.

Performance: A beast

The flagship of OnePlus was and still is performance. Except for OnePlus X, each OnePlus smartphone always had the best hardware on the market at launch. OnePlus 7 Pro continues this tradition.

OnePlus 7 Pro includes Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Adreno 630 GPU. Depending on the memory, RAM has 6, 8 or 12 GB and 128 or 256 GB UFS 3.0. Currently, the main memory is only used in OnePlus 7 Pro and should be able to demonstrate its benefits in performance measurement. The hardware, along with OxygenOS, catapults the OnePlus 7 Pro behind the Huawei P30 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S10+.

In addition to the rough performance of the system sweeten with OnePlus 7 Pro two other little things everyday life. First, the ability to find it. OnePlus offers 7 Pro dual-frequency capabilities for GPS and GPS / A systems in the US. UU., As well as the European satellite network Galileo. Technically, this means that the positioning accuracy of 10-15 meters drops to only 1-15 meters and the location can be determined faster. Besides, this increases the accuracy of the location in closed buildings, so that one is better prepared for inland navigation. During our process in Berlin, which also contained closed rooms, the place was determined very quickly and accurately.

Another important innovation is the LTE speed. During our measurement on the T-Mobile network in Berlin, the Qualcomm X50 modem with LTE support for Downstream Cat 18 and Upstream Cat 13 increased to 213 Mbps for downloads and 59 Mbps for loads may vary in other networks and speed models.

On each new OnePlus smartphone or even every update of OxygenOS, we have been searching in vain for switches to enable VoLTE and Wi-Fi calls in the Settings. With OnePlus 6, the alternatives have already appeared in the United Kingdom, but we are left behind in other European countries. However, With OnePlus 7 Pro, these features also seem to be available in Germany. We test them with SIM cards from the three largest network operators, and VoLTE and Wi-Fi calls are available in Germany! Ask for help in your area and let us know in the comments below.

Audio: A tidy sound

The visual experience is only half as good if the audio experience is not related to it. The OnePlus 7 Pro offers at least an enhanced audio experience as the smartphone now delivers stereo audio. For this purpose, the smartphone was equipped with a chat speaker, which is now also used as a speaker for multimedia content. The sound is good for a smartphone with stereo speakers but better than for monaural speakers.

If you do not want to hear your surroundings, you’ll need to use a Bluetooth headset because OnePlus 7 Pro does not have a 3.5mm connection. There is not even a OnePlus dongle that comforts us.

Camera: More Camera, More Creativity

At last! OnePlus offers 7 Pro more variety or better image composition options. The 48-megapixel main camera is compatible with an extremely wide-angle lens of 117 degrees and 16 megapixels. It also has an 8-megapixel phone lens with a 3x optical zoom. The expandable front camera features the Sony IMX471, which takes selfies with 16 megapixels. In summary, the OnePlus 7 Pro triple camera consists of the following units:

Sony IMX586 48 MP sensor with 1: 1.6 aperture, optical and electronic image stabilization
Ultra-wide 16MP camera (117 degrees FOV), 1: 2.2 aperture
8 megapixel (3x optical) zoom camera, f / 2.4 aperture, OIS
Multiple autofocus system: PDAF, CAF and laser autofocus

OnePlus does not use an unknown sensor in the main camera, but the Sony IMX586 sensor, which is currently very popular among Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Honor, Xiaomi and Oppo use the same sensor. Therefore, OnePlus 7 Pro should provide image quality results similar to those of Oppo Reno 10x, Honor View 20 and Xiaomi Mi 9. Therefore, it depends more on the software and OnePlus has improved some of the software.

OnePlus has left almost nothing on the surface of the camera application that has changed a lot. Rather, the algorithm was optimized under the hood. When you take pictures, you will notice that OnePlus has worked a lot on the software. As long as you don’t take photos in Pro mode, the photos will always be taken at 12 megapixels, combining four pixels into a “superpixel.” This should improve the quality of your photos, especially at night. If you observe OnePlus yourself, the quality improves in low light. While OnePlus 6 and 6T needed a very soft hand for night shots, OnePlus 7 Pro is now very fast at night. However, the process takes a little longer than Huawei.

In principle, the photos taken with OnePlus 7 Pro are good. Two additional focal distances now give you more design freedom. Distant objects can be closer than the iPhone XS or even the Samsung Galaxy S10 +, which “only” have a 2x optical zoom. The extreme wide-angle lens allows you to capture beautiful landscapes.

Battery: Is it enough?

The OnePlus 7 Pro battery has a generous 4000 mAh. Ideally, this battery type should charge the smartphone for an average day. For OnePlus 7 Pro, however, note that the factory default setting for the display is the maximum resolution and the highest refresh rate. Manufacturers like Samsung often ship smartphones with lower resolutions to extend battery life. In the PC Mark battery test, OnePlus 7 Pro supported almost 8 hours of continuous operation. For comparison, the Huawei P30 Pro reached just under 14 hours, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ just over 10 hours.

But the benchmarks are, as always, just the other side of the coin and everyday life is different. In our test, we use the OnePlus 7 Pro once at 90 Hz for QHD+ and once at 60 Hz for FullHD+. During the display time, the battery life of this daily test was 5:02 hours and 5:53. It is, therefore, possible to obtain an additional battery by reducing the resolution and the refresh rate. OnePlus, as the industry standard, will undoubtedly optimize battery life through software upgrades after the launch. Besides, Android 9 Smart Battery Management has not yet adapted to my usage behavior.

If the 7 Pro runs out of power while out and about, the included AC adapter should be useful. The new power supply is identical to the OnePlus 6T McLaren and charges your smartphone with the Warp Charge 30. Within 78 minutes, the OnePlus 7 Pro charges from zero to 100%. Within 30 minutes, 54 percent of the 4000 mAh battery is already charged.

Price: Value for Money

Compared to the $ 1,000 that flagships are now standard, the OnePlus 7 Pro is still a value-based phone. For the money, it loses the competition for gross performance, user interface and build quality, although he neglects certain things. This is still a flagship, but it makes commitments that some users may not be satisfied with.

If you want an amazing camera, long battery life, wireless charging, officially measured water resistance or headphone jack, you will need to soak the Samsung Galaxy S10e battery for $749 or the S10 for $899 a bit more. But if you only focus on speed, a great interface, and a large and clear screen, the 7 Pro is still a fair deal.

Although several strong competitors emerged in the last few months. These include the Xiaomi Mi 9T/Redmi K20, the Asus ZenFone 6, Honor 20 Pro, and the ZTE Axon 10 Pro.

Final Verdict

Should a premium smartphone fan now prefer OnePlus 7 Pro than Samsung Galaxy S10+ or Huawei P30 Pro? OnePlus worked mainly with 7 Pro camera software and is making big strides. Compared to the Huawei P30 Pro and Google Pixel 3 XL, however, it is not as good as it could be in post-production. However, this is not a marketer because OnePlus 7 Pro is a Champions League smartphone with a full performance suite, great display, software very close to the Android Stock experience and price.

Besides, with the OnePlus product extension, it makes sense to get one of its flagship product offerings, including many fans and community-demanding features, in addition to OnePlus 7, the technically modified 6T. Only huge dimensions and enormous weight can scare potential buyers.
