Dell XPS 15 2019 Laptop Review: A Near Bezel-Less OLED Laptop 2

Dell XPS 15 2019 Laptop Review: A Near Bezel-Less OLED Laptop

The elegant and sophisticated design and performance of the Dell XPS 15 (2019) have been praised over the years. This year’s enhancements include the OLED display and finally moving the webcam from below the display to the top center where it belongs. Even with the Intel Core i9-9980HK processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics, the XPS 15 is powerful even though it was mixed in our game tests. The OLED display option is limited to some high-end models, so the best displays are not available to everyone.

  • Webcam in the right place
  • Amazing display
  • Strong productivity performance

  • Lackluster for gaming
  • OLED only offered on most expensive configurations

The XPS 15 looks almost unchanged compared to previous years. On the one hand, the design is too familiar to those who see it year after year, but there is still much to consider when buying a new machine. The XPS 15 is thin, clean and almost borderless.

The aluminum cover is pleasantly Spartan, except for the Dell logo. Above all, it has slightly rounded corners and clean lines. Opening the lid and seeing a display of 15.6-inch (in this case 4K and OLED) with very thin edges is something special. Although this used to mean that the webcam was inserted under the screen, this year’s model is brought back in the right place (see the webcam section below).

The cover is covered with carbon fiber, which fits nicely on the wrists when writing and guarantees an interesting visual design.

On the left side are the power connector, the USB 3.1 Gen 1 type A connector, the HDMI 2.0 output, the Thunderbolt 3 and the headphone/microphone connector. On the right side is a full-size SD card reader (which is becoming weirder), as well as another USB 3.1 Gen 1-Type A connector and a wedge-shaped locking slot.

The measurement of XPS 14 x 9.7 x 0.7 inches (357 x 235 x 17 mm) and 4.6 pounds (2 kg), comparable to 15-inche HP Spectre x360 (4.5 lb, 15, 2 x 8.8 · 0.8 Inches), although the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (3.8 pounds, 14.2 x 9.7 x 0.7 inches) is lighter.

Productivity Performance

Our XPS 15 review unit did not shorten on the specifications. Intel Core i9-9980HK, 32GB RAM and 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe are more than the average workload and become the entry-level workstation.

In Geeketch 4.1, the XPS 15 scored 28,165, more than twice the average premium notebook category (13,797). It also scored above the Specter x360 (Core i7-8565U) and the X1 Extreme (Core i7-8750H).

It took 10 seconds to copy a 4.97 GB file. This is equivalent to 508.9 Mbit/s, which is below the average of 652.9 Mbit/s and the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (1017 Mbit/s). However, it is faster than Specter x360.

In our Handbrake video editing test, XPS required 8 minutes to encode a 4K video at 1080p. This is much faster than the average 21:55 and the Specter x360 (21:13), and the X1 Extreme (10:03) is just over 2 minutes late.

In the Cinebench R15 stress test, the laptop started its record high of 1,606.4 before falling to the 1400’s lowest point, where it quickly stabilized, except for a drop to 1295.21 in race 7 before recovering. During the test, we worked at an average clock speed of 3 GHz and an average processor temperature of 81 degrees Celsius.

Gaming and Graphics

Dell does not specifically market the XPS 15 as a gaming laptop, but it can handle some of the less intense titles or games with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory.

I did the Shadow of Tomb Raider benchmark, but the budget gaming laptops use a resolution of 1920×1080, anti-aliasing SMAA and high graphics. The game ran an average of 30 frames per second.

I also changed the stress test of the games. I ran to the Metro: Exodus simulated 15 times in a half-hour game loop. But even though we normally run RTX or Ultra presets, we are done.

For 15 runs, the average frame rate was 75 frames per second. Executions often start at around 150 frames per second, but then fall quickly for most of the reference point, between 50 and 80 frames per second.

During the Metro test, the CPU operated at an average clock speed of 2.4 GHz, which is a basic clock. The frequency was sometimes up to 4.1 GHz but was often gasified below the base clock at a frequency of approximately 2.2 GHz or even 1.8 GHz. Average processor temperature measured at 74 degrees (165.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

The GPU operated at an average clock speed of 1535 MHz and the average temperature of the GPU was 71.3 degrees (160.3 degrees Fahrenheit).

To compare the XPS 15 with other 15-inch competitors, we run the 3DMark Fire Strike application. The XPS reached a score of 8,198, while the Spectre x360 (GeForce MX150) 3,265 and the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (GeForce GTX 1050 Ti) reached 6,429 points.

The XPS 15 screen has always been a protagonist, but now that OLED laptops are back in fashion, this is especially true. The XPS 15 not only has minimal frames (or as Dell calls it, the InfinityEdge display), but the panel here is bright and beautiful. When I looked at the 4K open source movie Tears of Steel, I noticed the shooter’s brown eyes while looking at the rifle, and the mango juice box in hand was visible on a blue background.

The screen covers 239 percent of the sRGB color range, far more than the average premium laptop (131 percent). The spectre x360 has an even lower range (258%).

But damn, this screen is bright. XPS has an average brightness of 626 nits, which is above the average of 345 nits and both competitors.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Despite a simple 1.1mm keyboard, the XPS keyboard is comfortable and clickable. I achieved 106 words per minute on the 10fastfingers.com writing test. This is the lowest level in my normal range with a normal error rate of 2%.

The 4.1 by 3.1 inch touchpad is comfortable and spacious, and the Windows 10 precision drivers make gestures work for the first time. And if I swipe a four-finger swipe up to open the Task viewer or just two fingers to browse a web page, it worked flawlessly.

The XPS 15 speakers are comfortable and loud, with many details. I heard “Wait For Me” the soundtrack of Hadestown, and the strings and pianos were the voices of the actors (Reeve Carney and André De Shields). With Waves Maxx Audio Pro, I was able to make the instruments a little smoother with other songs, which was much more enjoyable.

The XPS 15 RAM and SSD can be easily updated if you have the necessary screwdrivers. The bottom of the laptop is secured by 12 screws. Ten of them are Torx screws, which I removed with a Torx T5. Then, under the XPS ID, there are some Phillips screws that I have removed with a Phillips head #0.

When you remove the bracket, the two SODIMM slots are in the front and the middle. The SSD slot is on the left, above the massive 97 Whr battery.

Battery Life

4K display, OLED, discrete GPU, and battery life for the whole day? Maybe you can have it all. In our battery test, which constantly surfs the web, sends videos and runs OpenGL tests, the XPS 15 has maintained 8 hours and 7 minutes, which is below the higher 8:25, though most of them do not have an OLED display with the Specter x360 a separate video card and a darker screen, turned out to be faster at 7:46. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme 4K HDR panel was held at just 6:07.

In normal use, the exterior of the XPS 15 is not too hot. After streaming 15 minutes of HD video from Youtube, the center of the keyboard between the G and H keys reached 32.3 degrees Celsius, the touchpad temperature was 28.5 degrees Celsius, and the hottest part of the bottom was measured 36.6 degrees Celsius (97.9 degrees Celsius).

Of course, this laptop has a GTX 1650, so when I did the Metro Exodus comparison, I measured again to simulate games or intensive work. When this worked, the keyboard reached 40.7 degrees Celsius, the touchpad rose to 29.1 degrees Celsius, and the bottom reached 44.9 degrees Celsius.

Thank God.

Earlier this year, after XPS 13, the XPS 15 finally has a webcam above the screen. The 720p camera is not the sharpest but offers enough pictures for conversations. The picture I made on my desk was not a big point even though I couldn’t see all the hair in my head and the blue and white stripes on my shirt were all colorful. I can finally use this thing without embarrassing it.

Software and Warranty

The Dell software package is not too embarrassing and even useful. With Dell Power Manager and Dell Mobile Connect, you can retrieve notifications from your phone and view the screen of your Android device on a live XPS screen. We also add Netflix and Dropbox, which I hope will be left to users.

Otherwise, Windows 10 still has the usual spinning garbage like Fitbit Coach, two separate versions of Candy Crush and Spotify.

Dell sells XPS 15 with a one-year warranty.

Our  XPS 15 review unit was maxed out. It’s a $2,649.99 ($ 2,899.00) monster with an Intel Core i9-9980HK processor, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB GDDR5 memory, 32GB DDR6 RAM at 2,666MHz: and 1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe, 4K OLED display. For this purpose, it had a 97 Wh battery.

The base model costs $ 1,099.99 with Intel Core i5-9300H, 8GB RAM, 256GB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD, 1920×1080 display and 56-Whr battery.

In the middle are a handful of options with Intel Core i7-9750H and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 processors and an FHD display with different amounts of RAM.

Final Verdict

The Dell XPS 15 2019 remains one of the best mid-range laptops, with limited options for the desktop computer.

The OLED screen is undoubtedly a beauty. There is only one problem: it is currently limited to a few expensive ones. The basic model does not have an option or even an increase, so you will have to be willing to pay for it.

If you want OLED but don’t need such a solid specification, the HP Spectre x360 15-inch with OLED can be faster. For $1,799, you get a Specter x360 with Core i7-8656U OLED, 16GB of RAM and GeForce MX150 graphics. If you want the 2-in-1 option, you can also get the Spectre x360 to get a conversion utility.

Of course, the XPS 15 has more powerful graphic options designed to facilitate the game (although our tests were different) and creative tasks.

In any case, the OLED laptop is back and on the XPS 15, it looks better than ever. If you want to prepare a first-class configuration with a very bright screen and other possible components, the XPS 15 is a good option.
